The Fraser Coast has a beach for every mood. On the mainland, Hervey Bay’s north-facing shoreline is famously calm — protected by K’gari (Fraser Island) from the ocean swell — which makes it ideal for families, swimmers and stand-up paddlers. Cross to K’gari itself and the mood flips to wild, windswept and spectacular. Here are the beaches worth seeking out.
1. Torquay Beach, Hervey Bay
The liveliest stretch of the Hervey Bay Esplanade, Torquay is the social heart of the local beach scene — calm, safe water backed by cafés, shaded parks and beachside barbecues. It is the easy choice for a swim followed by coffee or lunch, and its central location makes it a natural base for a day on the bay.
2. Scarness Beach, Hervey Bay
A little quieter than Torquay but just as calm and family-friendly, Scarness is perfect for swimming, paddling and picnics under the pines. The gentle, protected water is a big part of why Hervey Bay is such a relaxed swimming destination — there is rarely much surf to worry about.
3. Urangan and the Pier
On the eastern side of Hervey Bay, Urangan is home to the iconic Urangan Pier stretching far out over the water. Anglers line the pier, families spread out on the sand and the barbecue facilities make it a favourite for a sunset picnic. Time it for late afternoon and the light over the bay is hard to beat.
4. Point Vernon and Gatakers Bay
At the northern end of the Esplanade, Point Vernon and Gatakers Bay trade wide sandy stretches for rock pools, headlands and a quieter, more rugged feel. It is the spot for low-tide exploring, a peaceful walk and a swim away from the busier central beaches.
5. 75 Mile Beach, K’gari
The headline act. Running the length of K’gari’s eastern shore, 75 Mile Beach doubles as a highway, a runway and a jaw-dropping stretch of wild coast. This is four-wheel-drive country — you do not swim here (strong currents and marine life make it unsafe), but you come for the sheer scale, the coloured sands of The Pinnacles, the wreck of the Maheno and the natural spa pools of the Champagne Pools nearby.
6. Lake McKenzie, K’gari
Not a beach in the ocean sense, but no list of Fraser Coast shorelines is complete without it. Lake McKenzie is a perched freshwater lake ringed by pure white silica sand and startlingly clear, blue water — one of the most photographed places in Queensland, and a blissful, safe place to swim after the wildness of the eastern beach.
7. Woodgate Beach
For genuine get-away-from-it-all peace, Woodgate Beach at the region’s southern edge offers a long, quiet stretch of sand backed by the Burrum Coast National Park. It is the antidote to the crowds — sleepy, scenic and perfect for a long walk with almost no one else around.
Planning your beach days
The mainland Hervey Bay beaches are calm and swimmable almost year-round; K’gari’s ocean beaches are for sightseeing and four-wheel-driving rather than swimming, and are best explored on a guided tour if you are not experienced with soft-sand driving. Winter brings the added bonus of whale season just offshore — pair a beach day with our Hervey Bay whale watching guide for the full Fraser Coast experience.
