Brisbane Metro is the project on everyone’s lips. The planned $20bn expansion of the Brisbane Metro set to quadruple the public transport network by 2043. With stage one already underway, services from Eight Mile Plains to Roma St and the University of Queensland to RBWH are slated to be up and running by 2023. Not to be outdone the impressive 10.2km Cross River Rail line from Dutton Park to Bowen Hills is set to be completed the following year.
The projects are just the start of a much needed future-proofing strategy to keep up with Brisbane’s unprecedented population and migrational growth. With statistics predicting South East Queensland to continue to be Australia’s fastest growing region and a population of 5.5 million by the mid 40’s it is all part of the governments plans to not get caught out by the inevitable growth.
Cr Schrinner believes that by 2043 Brisbane will boast citywide 24/7 transport with Buses and local shuttles running a driverless system able to change routes according to digitally registered demand.
The current upgrade is paving the way to a potential network that could encompass a distance including Toowoomba, the Sunshine and Gold Coast’s. Deputy Mayor Adrian Schrinner stated that the projects were just the beginning and that having a pipeline of projects beyond those currently in development was crucial. Cr Schrinner stated that with-in the next 25 year period we should at least be looking to have a network encompassing the greater Brisbane region.
Cr Schrinner believes that by 2043 Brisbane will boast citywide 24/7 transport with Buses and local shuttles running a driverless system able to change routes according to digitally registered demand. By utilising the technology on hand in combination with well designed infrastructural upgrades the local government hopes to keep one step ahead of the growing population.
Cr Schrinner has expressed confidence in the foresight put on the table from past and ongoing conversations with a push to ensure future projects are ready to go before the completion of the Metro and Cross River Railway.
